THE DIGEST
Malcolm Gladwell Returns to Headline Lancaster Chamber's 154th Annual Dinner 🎤
Bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell will keynote the Lancaster Chamber's 154th annual dinner on May 28 at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St. It marks the first time in the chamber's history that a keynote speaker has been invited back to the stage. Gladwell first addressed the dinner 10 years ago, when he challenged the local business community to view transformation as a collective effort rather than the work of individual "superstars."
His return also coincides with the 25th anniversary of his book "The Tipping Point," and he's got a new one — "Revenge of the Tipping Point." The event runs from 4 to 9 p.m. and tickets are $250. Chamber president and CEO Heather Valudes said the return visit lets the community "revisit those ideas at a moment when they feel even more relevant." If you've got a seat at the table, it should be a good one.
Lancaster City Named a Finalist for America's Favorite Small Town 🏆
Lancaster city just beat out more than 300 towns to become a national finalist in Parade magazine and Steller's "America's Favorite Small Town" contest. Voting closed Saturday, and Lancaster finished in the top 10 in public voting — the only Pennsylvania location among 40 national finalists. New Hope and Jim Thorpe both got knocked out earlier. The contest celebrates towns with populations under 250,000 in honor of the nation's 250th anniversary.
Lancaster City Alliance and Discover Lancaster teamed up on the application, which highlighted First Friday events, walkability, green spaces, and the "scenic countryside" just minutes from downtown. Regional winners (one each from five U.S. regions) will be announced June 1, and a national winner on June 12. The winner gets a print feature in Parade, a sponsored community celebration during the Fourth of July, and — possibly — a reveal on a national morning show. Fingers crossed.
Lititz-Based Tait Acquires the Production Company Behind Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Film 🎪
Lititz-based Tait just made another big move. The company announced it has acquired Silent House Group, a Burbank, California-based production company that does live event production, tour management, and production for streaming, film, and TV. Silent House's recent resume includes Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film, the Backstreet Boys' Las Vegas Sphere concert residency, and the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards), which streamed on Netflix.
Silent House's 40 current employees will be retained, and there are no plans to relocate. Tait's global headquarters is at 401 W. Lincoln Ave. in Lititz, and the company has more than 700 employees in Lancaster County and about 2,000 worldwide across 24 locations. Silent House founder Baz Halpin said the move will let them "bring our clients' ideas to life faster and more economically, without compromising the artistic vision." Tait keeps getting bigger — and Lititz keeps punching way above its weight.
Compass Mill Tap House Closing Near Lititz After Four Years 🍺
Compass Mill Tap House, the tiny 20-seat microbrewery at 809 Rothsville Road near Lititz, is closing May 31. Owner Clyde Mackey broke the news on Facebook: "My heart and energy are no longer with me and I just can't do it anymore." The brewery opened in 2022 in a building next to Artisan Mill Co., a vendor marketplace in a former mill. No kitchen — Mackey always encouraged customers to bring in food from local restaurants.
Mackey, 61, is a retired truck driver and longtime homebrewer who also helped open Big Dog Craft Brewing along Manheim Pike back in 2020. He decided to close as his lease was coming up for renewal. He plans to sell his brewery equipment and maybe pick up a part-time job, but says he'll keep making beer at home. Four years is a solid run for a passion project — raise a glass before May 31 if you can.
Olympic Figure Skater Johnny Weir Visits Quarryville Family Restaurant ⛸️
Olympic figure skater and Quarryville native Johnny Weir popped into the Quarryville Family Restaurant at 134 E. State St. on Tuesday. "It was such a pleasure having him stop in and spend part of his day with us," the restaurant wrote on Facebook. The visit came less than a week after fans watched Weir make it to the finale of Peacock's murder mystery game show "The Traitors."
Weir grew up in Quarryville before moving to Delaware in middle school to train as a competitive figure skater. He's a three-time U.S. national champion and two-time Winter Olympian. He and broadcasting partner Tara Lipinski just wrapped commentating duties at the Winter Olympics in Milan, and they're expected to be in Prague later this month for the 2026 ISU Figure Skating World Championships. But clearly, he still makes time for a stop at the hometown diner. Love to see it.
