Good morning, Lancaster.
We lost an hour of sleep Saturday night. We gained an hour of sunlight today. Fair trade?
In today's Lancaster Ledger:
A new gallery just opened inside a parking authority building
Lancaster schools are rethinking how they prepare kids for life
F&M students shaved their heads for a great cause
A chip factory in Columbia is becoming a boutique hotel
Let's do it.

THE DIGEST
Curio Gallery & Creative Supply opens at former Lancaster Parking Authority building 🎨
Curio Gallery & Creative Supply has a new home — and it's not where you'd expect. Owners Matt Chapman and Nicole Duquette moved the gallery and shop into the former offices of the Lancaster Parking Authority at 111 N. Prince St. The new, larger space debuted during First Friday on March 6 with an inaugural exhibition featuring Jeff Geib's collection "Book of Falling Leaves." About 75% of the building houses Curio, while the remaining 25% still serves the parking authority's maintenance staff.
The partnership was actually the parking authority's idea — executive director Larry Cohen helped conceptualize the project as a way to foster growth in the community with a focus on the arts. The gallery had previously been located at 106 W. Chestnut St. An art gallery inside a parking authority building? Only in Lancaster.
Lancaster schools exploring new ways to boost students' real-world skills 📚
The School District of Lancaster is looking at new ways to build executive functioning and problem-solving skills across all grade levels. The topic came up at the school board's March 3 meeting as part of a broader push to prepare students for life after high school — not just college, but trades and careers too. Local employers told a district committee that students coming out of high school are struggling to maintain focus, plan ahead, and solve problems on their own.
The district wants to expand career learning opportunities, improve the continuity of lessons from kindergarten through 12th grade, and support realistic post-secondary plans for every student. It's the kind of behind-the-scenes work that doesn't make headlines but could genuinely change outcomes for kids in this community. Worth watching.
F&M students raise $30,000 by shaving their heads for childhood cancer research ✂️
More than 15 Franklin & Marshall College students shaved their heads on Sunday at the annual St. Baldrick's Day event, raising $30,000 for childhood cancer research. The student-run event was held at the Phi Kappa Tau house on campus in Lancaster. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives.
Thirty thousand dollars and a lot of brave buzz cuts. If you saw a bunch of freshly shaved heads walking around campus this week, now you know why — and you know it was for an incredible cause. Love to see it.
Former potato chip factory in Columbia set to become an 80-room hotel by late July 🏨
The Hampton Inn by Hilton at The Chip Factory in Columbia is on track to welcome overnight guests by late July. The $22 million project at 12 N. Second St. — at the corner of Second and Locust — preserves the facade of the former Becker Pretzel Bakeries potato chip division building, which has been closed since the 1960s. Lancaster-based Wohlsen Construction is leading the build, and the finished hotel will feature 80 rooms, a first-floor restaurant, a rooftop lounge with Susquehanna River views, a fitness center, and pet-friendly rooms.
Developer Don Murphy of Murphy Hospitality Group put it well: the project is "far more than a hotel" — it's "about honoring Columbia's history while investing in its future." A rooftop lounge overlooking the Susquehanna? We'll be making a reservation.
