TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Lancaster.

Today is the first day of spring. We made it. The crocuses are popping, the pollen is plotting, and somewhere in Lancaster County, a bald eagle just became a mom. More on that in a second.

In today's Lancaster Ledger:

• A bald eagle egg just hatched on livestream

• Lancaster landmarks are up for USA Today's 10Best

• Gallery Row's new apartments open next month

• Saladworks in Centerville Square is closing

• Zenkaikon takes over downtown this weekend

Let's do it.

THE DIGEST

First of 4 eggs hatch at livestreamed Lancaster County bald eagle nest 🦅

Lancaster County's most famous bird family just got bigger. The first of four eggs in a livestreamed bald eagle nest hatched Monday evening around 9 p.m., and by Wednesday morning, mama eagle was already on feeding duty. The PA Farm Country Eagles Live Cam has been streaming the nest from an unnamed Lancaster County farm since 2019.

Four-egg clutches are uncommon, but this pair has done it before — three eaglets successfully fledged in both 2022 and 2023. The remaining three eggs are expected to hatch within the week. Watch the recap at lanc.news/firsthatch26. Love to see it.

Lancaster market, food hall are up for USA Today's 10Best Awards 🏆

If you've ever argued that Central Market is the best public market in the country, here's your chance to make it official. USA Today just dropped its new 10Best Readers' Choice nominees, and Lancaster County made the cut in multiple categories. Southern Market at 100 S. Queen St. was nominated for Best Food Hall — a first for the venue. Lancaster Central Market at 23 N. Market St. is back on the Best Public Market list, where it's placed in the top ten in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

You can vote once per day until noon on Monday, April 13, at USA Today's 10Best landing page. Central Market came in eighth in 2023, seventh in 2022, and fifth in 2021 — so the trajectory is heading the right direction. Get your daily votes in, Lancaster. Let's bring this one home.

Downtown Lancaster's Gallery Row is about to get a lot more foot traffic. Gallery 118, a new 72-unit apartment building at 118 N. Prince St., is expecting its first residents in early April. The building stands six stories on Prince Street and seven on Water Street, incorporating the preserved brick facade of the former Teachers Protective Mutual Life Insurance Co. building.

Units range from 510-square-foot studios starting at $1,400/month to three-bedroom units up to 1,881 square feet at $4,703/month. Amenities include a fifth-floor terrace and lounge, fitness center, bike storage, pet wash, and one reserved parking space per unit in the Prince Street garage across the street. If you're thinking about it, there's a deal on the table: sign a 13-month lease in March and get a free month's rent. Not bad for a Gallery Row address.

Centerville Square Saladworks closing, Lititz area location to remain open 🥗

If you're a Saladworks regular at Centerville Square, the clock is ticking. The location at 584-B Centerville Road will have its last day on March 29. Franchisees Curtis High and Jordan Rideout opened the spot back in 2011 — that's 15 years of made-to-order salads, sandwiches, and soups in that plaza.

The good news: the pair also owns a Saladworks near Lititz, and that location will continue serving customers. So your salad habit isn't dead — it's just moving.

Zenkaikon 2026: What to know about this year's pop culture, anime convention 🎮

If you're downtown this weekend and see someone dressed as a Titan from Attack on Titan walking into the Convention Center — don't be alarmed. Zenkaikon 2026 takes over the Lancaster County Convention Center at 25 S. Queen St. from March 20–22, bringing three days of anime, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming to the heart of the city.

This year's voice actor lineup is stacked: Caitlin Glass (Fullmetal Alchemist), Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time), Khary Payton (The Walking Dead), and Phil LaMarr (Futurama), among others. The volunteer-run convention features panels, cosplay, vendors, gaming, dances, and more. Tickets are $75 pre-reg or $80 at the door for a full weekend pass, $45 for Sunday only. Annie Bailey's is even getting in on the action with a Zenkaikon-themed celebration from 4–7 p.m. on Friday featuring a Japanese-inspired menu (yes, really).
